Olivia’s story

Olivia Flood took part in 2026's Chocolate 5K in memory of her grandfather, John. For her, the event was about much more than crossing the finish line.

Back in 2010, when Olivia was still a child, her grandfather received end of life care at Birmingham Hospice’s Inpatient Unit in Selly Park. Originally from Dublin, John spent his final days surrounded by compassionate care that left a lasting impression on Olivia and her family.

“I was quite into arts and crafts as a child, and the nurses were always so helpful in passing on my artwork when I couldn’t see Grandad anymore,” Olivia recalled.

As his condition worsened, Olivia was no longer able to visit, but the kindness shown to her grandfather and her family remained with her.

“Grandad was kept comfortable and his dignity was always respected. The support we had, both before he died and immediately afterwards, was incredible. He had quite a lot of secondary cancers and he died at the hospice.”

Now working at a funeral directors, Olivia sees first-hand the importance of hospice care and the difference it makes to families. Her connection to Birmingham Hospice has continued over the years, with previous participation in fundraising events like Run Santa Run.
